Good Death: A Tyranny or Useful Concept - Panel Discussion

In November 2023, Open Thanatology hosted an online webinar featuring a panel discussion about the concept of good death. Here is the edited recording of the webinar and an unedited transcript.

Online panel discussion about the concept of 'a good death' exploring what the concept can mean, its usefulness, and its limits. Panel speakers include:

Smriti Rana - Head of Policy & Strategic Partnerships, Pallium India. Trained as a psychologist and works on ensuring safe access to opioids analgesics for pain relief in India by engaging with central government and other stakeholders.

Hanum Atikasari - PhD Candidate at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Leiden University. Her research project is part of the ERC funded project on Globalizing Palliative Care.

Dr Aileen Collier - Associate Professor in Palliative Care and Aged Care Nursing, College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Flinders University Australia. Together with Michael Chapman, she has recently published on the concept of good death.

The event was co-hosted by Dr Libby Sallnow - palliative care consultant and lead author of the Lancet Commission on the Value of Death - and Prof Erica Borgstrom - lead for Open Thanatology and an academic specialising in death studies. The event was hosted by Open Thanatology at The Open University.
