Human Rights, Inhumane Wrongs: An Interpreter’s Voice

A.S. is an interpreter, formerly an Afghan asylum-seeker, who has lived in camps on Lesvos before gaining status as a refugee and working as an interpreter on the island. In this digital story, A.S. recounts the ‘bare life’ experiences of asylum-seekers living in inhumane conditions in Moria 2 – the camp that was set up after Europe’s largest refugee camp burned down in September 2020 as the pandemic unfolded. A.S. has listened to countless tragic testimonies of asylum-seekers about their in ability to access services or to stay safe during the pandemic- and the difficulty of sustaining hope in a heartless world. His question is clear – Human Rights exist to prevent inhumane wrongs – so do the rights of those living in Moria 2 not matter – do their lives not matter?
