Veganism is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act, but the experience of vegan students is under-researched. Moreover, veganism may intersect with other protected characteristics, for instance when it is informed by student’s religious beliefs. This project addresses this research gap by inviting vegan students to share their experiences in an online focus group, and by exploring how vegans and veganism are represented in a sample of OU social science modules. As respect for nonhuman animals’ experiences is central to veganism, the project will also explore how nonhuman animals are represented in that same sample of OU social science modules.
